The Lord, in subjecting us to the spiritual combat,
wishes us to understand that we pursue a great good,
since conquest cost us so dear.
What would be the grief of a miser
if he had spent his time
and money in cultivating a vine,
and if, at the moment of highest promise,
it was destroyed by hail!
But if the hailstones were of gold,
how he would rejoice,
since the gain would far exceed the loss!
Now, suffering and contempt are pure gold,
nay, pearls of infinite price,
for those who know how to bear them
with faith and Christian patience.
