‘Woe to him who is alone!’

says the Holy Scripture.

Alas! how many are alone,

although surrounded by relatives and friends.

We are alone, when we are not with God.

We are alone

when we do not possess the friendship of God.

Tolerable, perhaps, in health,

and while life is pleasant and prosperous,

this isolation becomes a frightful solitude,

when grief and trial

weigh heavily upon us.

Then we recognise the bitterness

of having abandoned Him,

who gives strength

and consolation.

Love, friendship, devotion,

wait vainly at our pillow;

we feel ourselves alone.
